Why Drumming is so good for you

  • Access deep meditative states fast, with joy and inspiration!

So often meditation practitioners feel frustrated or bored at some point in their practice. Drumming renews inspiration, amplifies intention, and strengthens our concentration while also providing a joyful meditation experience. Drumming makes meditation fun and easy! Drumming helps us release negative emotions and tap into the joy of creative expression through the production of endorphins, enkephalins, and alpha waves in the brain, which are associated with general feelings of well-being and euphoria. Anyone who has tried a drum circle knows the feelings of positivity, collectiveness and connectedness drummers share. Drumming together offers an enormous mood boost and is incredibly therapeutic.

  • Meditation with the drum improves concentration!

Drumming is extremely effective as a meditation tool because it improves our concentration and reduces mind chatter and distraction, which helps us to focus during meditation and in our daily life. Drumming can slow down the frequency of our brain waves which allows us to access deep meditative states quickly with ease! This is accomplished through the process of entrainment. When a drum beat is listened to long enough, the human brain begins to follow the beats, which in scientific terms is called entrainment – brainwave entrainment.

  • Expand your consciousness, connect to new possibility.

The drum holds a long tradition in ceremony and sacred practice. Drums have been the instrument of choice throughout the world since ancient times for ceremony and sacred practice. Shamans use the drum to travel to other dimensions. High priestesses of ancient times used the frame drum to invoke higher states of consciousness. Still today the drum is played in Buddhist and Hindu temples. “One of the most powerful aspects of drumming and the reason people have done it since the beginning of being human is that it changes people's consciousness. Through rhythmic repetition of ritual sounds, the body, the brain and the nervous system are energized and transformed. When a group of people play a rhythm for an extended period of time, their brain waves become entrained to the rhythm and they have a shared brain wave state. The longer the drumming goes on, the more powerful the entrainment becomes. It's really the oldest holy communion.” – Layne Redmond It is remarkable how quickly we enter into deep meditative states through drumming, which is magnified in groups. The brain is especially receptive to the range of frequency from the drum which makes it a powerful tool to expand consciousness. The harmonizing effect of drumming on the brain can be found on both the vertical and horizonal axis, i.e. the right/left as well as the upper/lower brain. Drumming appears to synchronize the lower areas of the brain (non-verbal) with the frontal cortex (language and reasoning). This integration produces feelings of insight and certainty. The drum also harmonizes the right and left-brain hemispheres which supports expanded consciousness, amplifies our intuition, and much more!

  • Reduce stress and improve mental strength through drumming.

Drumming induces deep relaxation and reduces feelings of stress. In one study, blood samples from volunteers who participated in an hour-long drumming session revealed a reversal in stress hormones. Stress reduction allows for greater mental clarity and is key to establish mental health so that we can enjoy life and relationships in a more positive way. Drumming engages and harmonizes both sides of the brain which can improve mental health and help you tap into greater creativity, intuition, and access deep meditative states. Most people use one hemisphere more than the other, creating an imbalance. “By integrating both hemispheres of your brain and allowing them to work in sync, you will experience an improvement in overall mental health, enhanced cognitive performance, better memory and intellectual functioning. You will begin to notice a limitless supply of insightful thoughts, with far less anger, anxiety, depression, and addiction. You will be happier, more optimistic, while feeling more "at one" with the world. All of these benefits do build one on top of the other, accumulating over time.” (EOC Institute, USA). In addition, electroencephalograph (EEG) studies have shown that humanity's greatest philosophers, thinkers, inventors, and artists use both brain hemispheres together, in unison. Harmonized brain hemispheres are a marker for excellence. *Professor Frederic Ullen from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm correlates a strong link between timekeeping and the functioning parts of the brain used for problem solving: “The rhythmic accuracy in brain activity that is observed when a person maintains a steady beat is also important to the problem-solving capacities measured with the intelligence tests.”

  • Studies show there are many health benefits to drumming.

Drumming lowers blood pressure, produces feelings of well-being, releases negative feelings and emotional trauma, reduces stress and helps control chronic pain. Research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing and boosts the immune system. According to a specific study conducted by Barry Bittman, MD, group drumming increases T-cells which specialize in the destruction of cancer cells and viruses. Drumming can certainly serve as a distraction from pain. And, it promotes the production of endorphins and endogenous opiates, which are the body’s own morphine-like painkillers. Psychologist Robert Dunbar conducted an experiment which showed that drummers demonstrated a significantly higher pain threshold after performing when compared to the non-drumming subjects. They also reported higher levels of positive emotions.

  • Meditative Drumming awakens the spiritual heart (the residence of our true essence), which sparks a new lifestyle full of self-confidence, creativity, peace, and joy.

A Navajo Elder once said, "The great spirit loved the drum so much, he gave everyone a heartbeat." Drumming generates new neural connections in all parts of the brain. The increase of neural connections lead to a deeper sense of Self-awareness, allowing for the realization of your true essence within the Spiritual Heart. Meditative Drumming allows you to calm the mind and emotions while focusing on heartfulness, so that you can create a life you love. I invite you to discover the joy of life through rhythm!

Create a life you love.
