Drum circle
Black Elk, an Oglala Sioux holy man featured in the book Black Elk Speaks by John Neihardt, details the sacred cultural use of the drum from his perspective: “Since the drum is often the only instrument used in our sacred rites, I should perhaps tell you here why it is especially sacred and important to us. It is because the round form of the drum represents the whole universe, and its steady strong beat is the pulse, the heart, throbbing at the center of the universe. It is the voice of Wakan Tanka (Great Spirit), and this sound stirs us and helps us to understand the mystery and power of all things.”
Drumming is a very effective tool to expand consciousness.
I find it remarkable how quickly we enter into deep meditative states through drumming, which is magnified in groups. The drum has been the instrument of choice throughout the world since ancient times for ceremony and sacred practice. Shamans use the drum to travel to other dimensions. High priestesses of ancient times used the frame drum to invoke higher states of consciousness.
Studies show there are also many health benefits to drumming. Drumming induces deep relaxation, lowers blood pressure, produces feelings of well-being, releases negative feelings and emotional trauma, helps control cronic pain, and reduces stress. Research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing and boosts the immune system. According to a specific study conducted by Barry Bittman, MD, group drumming increases cancer-killing cells, as well as combating many other viruses.
Drumming engages and harmonizes both sides of the brain. Most people use one hemisphere more than the other, creating an imbalance. “By integrating both hemispheres of your brain and allowing them to work in sync, you will experience an increase in overall mental health, enhancing cognitive performance, better memory and intellectual functioning. You will begin to notice a limitless supply of insightful thoughts, with far less anger, anxiety, depression, and addiction. You will be happier, more optimistic, while feeling more "at one" with the world. All of these benefits do build one on top of the other, accumulating over time.“ (EOC Institute, USA).” In addition, ectroencephalograph (EEG) studies have shown that humanity's greatest philosophers, thinkers, inventors, and artists use both brain hemispheres together, in unison. By synchronizing the brain hemispheres we may also enter into deep meditative states.
Drumming is a great way to harmonize our inner rhythms and to connect with the earth. Life is always in a process of change and through drumming we can reconnect with our natural rhythm. I invite you to discover the joy of life through rhythm.
